The Showroom Standoff

Picture this: you walk into the LOXEA showroom on Victoria Island, Lagos, and the Atto 3 is right there, rotating touchscreen and all. A friend tells you to check the MG ZS EV at Stallion Motors on Akin Adesola Street first. Same price bracket, same SUV format, both from China. The salesperson at each dealership will tell you their car is the obvious choice. Nobody will tell you about the V2L socket or the suspension compromise.

We will. Here is everything you need to decide, before you sign anything.

Quick Verdict

The BYD Atto 3 is the better car for most Nigerian buyers. It has a longer real-world range, a bigger cabin, superior technology, and a feature that matters enormously in Nigeria: V2L (Vehicle-to-Load), which turns the car into a generator when NEPA goes. The MG ZS EV has one strong counter-argument: a longer-standing dealer network in Nigeria and native Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If either of those is non-negotiable for you, the MG deserves a second look. For everyone else, the Atto 3 wins this fight.

Range: The Distance That Matters

The Third Mainland Bridge is 11.8 km. Lagos to Ibadan is about 130 km. Lagos to Abuja is roughly 765 km. These are the distances that your range anxiety is actually about.

In hot climate testing comparable to Nigerian conditions, the BYD Atto 3 manages approximately 350 km of real-world range. The MG ZS EV Standard Range delivers approximately 260-280 km in similar conditions. That gap is not theoretical. In a country where public charging infrastructure is still nascent and concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, those extra 70-90 km are the difference between arriving comfortable and arriving anxious.

The Atto 3 also does it more cheaply: at a public DC fast charging rate of approximately N500 per kWh in Lagos, every 100 km costs the Atto 3 around N7,150 (at 14.3 kWh/100 km). The MG ZS EV costs around N8,600 per 100 km (at 17.2 kWh/100 km). That N1,450 gap per 100 km adds up fast on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Nigerian Roads: Ground Clearance and Suspension

This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: neither car was built for Ago Palace Way on a rainy night.

The Atto 3 has 175 mm of ground clearance. The MG ZS EV has 177 mm. The 2 mm difference is effectively nothing; you will not feel it between Lagos potholes. Both cars are urban electric SUVs, not bush vehicles.

What matters more than clearance is what happens when you hit a bump. The BYD Atto 3 runs MacPherson strut front suspension with a multi-link independent rear, tuned for a soft, composed ride. The MG ZS EV uses MacPherson front but a torsion beam rear, which reviewers from CarExpert Australia describe as creating a "pogo-ing" sensation over uneven surfaces.

For Lekki-Epe Expressway speed bumps and Berger interchange potholes, the Atto 3's fully independent rear suspension is the more comfortable choice. The MG ZS EV is adapted from an ICE (petrol) platform. The Atto 3 is built from the ground up as an EV on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, with a lower centre of gravity and a flatter floor throughout.

Interior: Where You Actually Live

The BYD Atto 3 is 132 mm longer and 135 mm wider than the MG ZS EV, with a wheelbase that is 135 mm longer (2,720 mm vs 2,585 mm). In the back seat, that difference is real. One MG ZS EV owner who test-drove the Atto 3 put it plainly: "The driver's seat and back seat are more comfortable and spacious [in the Atto 3]. The reversing camera and 360 camera are very good with superb clarity."

Boot space is a draw when the seats are up: 440 litres for the Atto 3 versus 470 litres for the MG. Fold the seats and the equation flips hard. The Atto 3 opens up to 1,338 litres; the MG ZS EV reaches 1,100 litres. That is a 22% advantage for the Atto 3 when you are moving things around.

The Atto 3 also comes standard with a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, wireless charging, an 8-speaker audio system, and a dash cam. The MG ZS EV's stronger card is native Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The Atto 3's DiLink OS (Android-based) does not offer wired CarPlay or Android Auto on older variants, which is a real drawback for Nigerians who rely on Google Maps and Waze for Lagos traffic.

The Screen

The BYD Atto 3's 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen is in a different class. It rotates between portrait and landscape modes, runs Spotify natively, has voice assistant integration, and receives OTA software updates. The MG ZS EV has a 10.1-inch fixed touchscreen with no OTA updates. If you have ever been stuck with outdated software on a device you paid millions for, you know why this matters.

The Nigerian Power Outage Argument

NEPA goes. It always goes. This is where the BYD Atto 3 does something the MG ZS EV cannot: the Atto 3 has V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability, outputting up to 2.2-3.2 kW through a standard socket. That is enough to run fans, phone chargers, a TV, lights, or even a small refrigerator while the inverter charges. E no be small thing.

The MG ZS EV has no V2L capability on the Standard Range or base variants. In any other market this would be a footnote. In Nigeria, it is a headline feature.

Battery Chemistry: Heat Matters Here

Nigeria is hot. Both the Atto 3 and the ZS EV know this, but they handle it differently.

The BYD Atto 3 uses LFP (lithium iron phosphate) Blade Battery chemistry, which is more thermally stable and significantly less prone to thermal runaway than the NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) chemistry used in the MG ZS EV. LFP degrades less in sustained heat, which means your battery capacity will hold up better over three to five years of Lagos parking lots and afternoon sun.

The MG ZS EV's NMC chemistry offers higher energy density, which is why the 50.3 kWh battery is physically smaller. But it is slightly more heat-sensitive. For a country where shade parking is a daily negotiation, the Atto 3's chemistry is the more durable long-term choice.

After-Sales in Nigeria: Who Has Your Back

This is the most Nigeria-specific part of the comparison, and you need to be honest with yourself about it.

BYD in Nigeria launched officially on March 28, 2025, through LOXEA Nigeria (a CFAO Mobility division). LOXEA is the exclusive authorized BYD distributor, with showrooms and service centres in Lagos (Victoria Island), Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The Victoria Island showroom houses Nigeria's first official BYD charging station. LOXEA's purchase package includes home charger installation and spare parts supply. As CFAO Group stated at launch: "LOXEA brings to Nigeria a comprehensive suite of services including the installation of electric charging stations, vehicle maintenance, repair services, and the provision of spare parts."

That is the official picture. The honest footnote is that LOXEA has only been operating in Nigeria since early 2025. The network is new. The technicians are trained but relatively inexperienced with the Nigerian context. If something goes wrong in Benin City or Kaduna, you are a long way from Victoria Island.

MG in Nigeria is represented by Stallion MG Automobiles Ltd and Coscharis Group, with MG Motor Nigeria's showroom at 180A Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. MG has had a longer presence in Nigeria than BYD, meaning more independent mechanics have spent more time around the platform. That head start on familiarity has a real value, especially if you intend to drive outside Lagos regularly.

Warranty: Read the Fine Print

On paper, the MG ZS EV's warranty is generous: 7 years and unlimited kilometres on both vehicle and battery in markets like Australia. The BYD Atto 3 offers 6 years / 150,000 km on the vehicle and 8 years / 160,000 km on the battery (with at least 70% health retention).

Here is what you must do before signing: call both dealers and get the Nigeria-specific warranty terms in writing. What applies in Australia does not automatically apply in Lagos. Confirm whether LOXEA Nigeria is matching BYD's global battery warranty terms, and whether MG Motor Nigeria is offering 7-year / unlimited km coverage locally. Do not assume.

Price: The Number Nobody Wants to Admit

The BYD Atto 3 is available through LOXEA Nigeria at an estimated N33-45 million. Multiple independent sources cite this range; one estimate (Autogiz.ng) puts the 2025 facelift at approximately N36 million. There is no single confirmed official price, so contact LOXEA directly at nigeria.loxea.com for a current quote.

For the MG ZS EV in Nigeria, no confirmed naira retail price was found across multiple searches. MG Motor Nigeria's website and Stallion Group's listings did not publish a specific figure at the time of writing. An EV24 Africa FOB listing for a 2023 MG ZS EV starts from $38,000 USD, which at the current rate of approximately N1,381 per USD translates to roughly N52.5 million before Nigerian import duties and dealer margin. That would put the MG ZS EV above the Atto 3 on landed cost, not below it. Call MG Motor Nigeria directly before assuming the MG is cheaper.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the BYD Atto 3 if:

  • You want the most range and the lowest charging cost per 100 km
  • NEPA outages are a real problem in your area and V2L would genuinely help
  • You have a family and rear legroom matters (the 135 mm extra wheelbase is felt back there)
  • You want a rotating screen, OTA updates, and a technology package that feels premium
  • You are comfortable with a newer dealer network and Lagos is your primary service location

Buy the MG ZS EV if:

  • You rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto daily and do not want to work around the Atto 3's DiLink OS
  • You want an established dealer network with longer history in Nigeria and more independent mechanics familiar with the platform
  • MG Motor Nigeria confirms a significantly lower naira retail price than the Atto 3
  • You do not need V2L and prefer the simplicity of a conventional SUV platform
  • The 7-year / unlimited km warranty is confirmed in Nigeria and that peace of mind is important to you
